SOPHIE ZURAWIK

SOPHIE ZURAWIK, age 94, of Sioux Falls, SD, formerly of Merrillville, IN, passed away on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at Prince of Peace in Sioux Falls, SD. Grateful for having shared her life are her two daughters, Diana (Dale) Mriscin and Rita (Dennis) Stevens; five grandchildren: Michelle (Lemont) Garrett, Steve (Alyssa) Mriscin, Lisa (Beau) Reiner, Christian (Meghan) Stevens, David Stevens; six great-grandchildren: Carter and Colton Mriscin, Isaac, Joseph and Elizabeth Reiner, Nora Stevens. Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Stanley Zurawik; parents, Stanley and Mary Andreasik; two sisters: Genevieve Andreasik, Stella (Henry) Lech; many other family and friends. Sophie appreciated and enjoyed being a long-time member of Blessed Sacrament Church and Rosary Sodality. She was a member of Madame Curie Circle PNA, Lodge #3134, Loyal Christian Benefits Association #1402, and Daughters of Isabella, Queen of Peace, Court #359. Sophie, the eldest of three daughters, was born July 8, 1918 in Holyoke, MA. Her parents had emigrated from Europe, her mother from Czechoslovakia and her father from Poland. When Sophie was ten years old, her family moved to Gary, IN. On May 25, 1940, Sophie married the love of her life, Stanley Zurawik in St. Hedwig Catholic Church, Gary. Together they made a loving home and raised two daughters, Diana and Rita. Sophie was a dedicated wife and mother and was an excellent cook. She helped her husband in his home construction business in many ways. After enjoying 31 years of marriage, Sophie sadly became a widow in 1972. Although for many years she lived a long distance from her daughters, Sophie was always willing to support them and their families in whatever way she could. In a special way, Diana and Rita will always be with Sophie in love and affection through God's grace. Sophie's favorite past times were needle working, baking, driving about on errands for others and herself (she learned to drive at the age of 53), visiting friends and family, and watching TV. Sophie's chosen motto was ?Don't Quit? taken from a favorite poem. She lived this motto courageously through faith-filled prayer to God and and His Beloved Mother.
